ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA – NOVEMBER 9, 2019 A 63-year-old man was pulled from the freezing Moyka River at around 5 am. He was resuscitated and taken to hospital with hypothermia. He was identified as Oleg Sokolov – a university professor and expert on Napoleonic history who often attended and organized historical reenactments.

Oleg had a small historical rucksack with him. Upon opening it, it was found to contain a pair of severed female hands. As it turned out later, they belonged to 24-year-old Anastasia Yeshchenko, whose full name is Anastasia Olegovna Yeshchenko. At this point, a large-scale police investigation began, focusing primarily on the river. The police found what they were looking for. Dismembered Yeshchenko’s body.

Later investigation revealed that Anastasia was his student, partner in historical reenactments, and also his lover. That day, Oleg became jealous in a drunken state, shot Anastasia 4 times with a historical weapon and then cut her body with a knife and a saw. He packed the pieces of the body in bags and took them to the river where he threw them. In the morning he went to check the site, but some parts did not want to sink. So he wanted to help them by hand himself, but by an unfortunate accident he fell into the river.

Sokolov received a sentence of 12.5 years in prison from the court. The public prosecutor sought 15 years for him.
