DOMINICAN REPUBLIC – SEPTEMBER, 2021 Long-term depression drove the unfortunate Belkis García to suicide. Her body was found lifeless behind the small shop she owned. A cup containing rat poison was found at the scene. Toxicology later confirmed that she had poisoned herself.

In addition to the poison, a farewell letter was left at the scene. In it, Belkis stated that she was deeply troubled by her poor appearance and obesity. She also mentioned her low self-esteem.
The incident highlights the importance of proper mental health care and open discussion about it in society. Visiting a psychologist or psychiatrist is still highly stigmatized in some countries, and people fear being perceived as crazy by those around them.
