SINOP, MATO GROSSO, BRAZIL – DECEMBER 10, 2025 João Ferreira da Silva, a man convicted of the brutal rape and murder of nine-year-old Bruno Aparecida dos Santos in 2005, was shot dead in Sinop, Mato Grosso, shortly after being released from prison. João had served over 20 years for the crime and also faced a separate ten-year sentence for sexually assaulting another child. The attack occurred on a street in front of a hotel, where two masked assailants confronted him and opened fire. Surveillance footage shows João being confronted and shot on the sidewalk. Police found shell casings at the scene and are investigating the suspects and whether the killing was premeditated.
João’s original crimes shocked the city: he lured Bruno into an unfinished building, beat and sexually assaulted him, and then killed him. The boy’s body was found buried in a shallow grave, with his clothes neatly placed beside him. João’s actions sparked public outrage, with hundreds attempting to storm the police station to lynch him, which led to his transfer to another city. His death now raises questions about vigilante justice and the risks faced by released convicts with high-profile criminal histories.
