Patient suffered a crushing injury to his hand with complete destruction of bone, muscle, nerves, and blood vessels. In this case the limb could no longer be saved, and the surgeons had to resort to the last possible option – amputation.
During the hand amputation, the surgeons first control the bleeding, then make an incision through the skin and soft tissues in a way that creates an appropriate skin flap to cover the stump. They then adjust the muscles, safely cut and smooth the bone, treat the nerves to prevent painful neuromas, and finally close the wound so that the stump is stable and suitable for later rehabilitation or a prosthesis.
