MIROPIL, KHMELNYTSKYI REGION, UKRAINE – JULY, 2021 Quiet village of Myropil was shaken by an appalling crime that arose from long-term family tension. Thirty-eight-year-old Oleksandr Peisak, who had been previously diagnosed with schizophrenia, brutally murdered his sixty-year-old mother Olha there during a violent conflict.

According to the police investigation and neighbor testimony, the relationship between mother and son was not ideal. Olha had long complained about her son’s apathy and inactivity; Oleksandr did not work, did not help in the household, and spent most of his time in idleness, which was likely worsened by his mental state. The final argument, which concerned precisely his way of life, became fatal for Olha. In a fit of rage, Oleksandr grabbed an axe, attacked his mother, and subsequently separated her head from her body.
After the deed, the man fled the scene. Police launched an extensive manhunt involving dozens of officers and local volunteers. Oleksandr tried to disappear in the dense forests surrounding the village. The search lasted nearly 24 hours and was accompanied by fears that the mentally unstable and armed man could attack someone else. Police eventually caught him in the forest thicket near the village where he was hiding.
He did not resist during the arrest, but he appeared confused and disoriented. Given his medical history, instead of a standard pre-trial detention cell, he was transferred to a specialized psychiatric facility under strict supervision.
