CULIACÁN, MEXICO – OCTOBER 17, 2019 During the events known as the first “Culiacanazo,” a sharp escalation of violence took place in the Mexican city of Culiacán between security forces and armed members of the Sinaloa drug cartel. The situation quickly spiraled out of control when federal units carried out an operation that triggered a large-scale and coordinated response from armed men across the city.
During these clashes, a member of the Mexican army was seriously injured. According to available information, he was hit by a shot from a heavy .50 caliber rifle and suffered an injury that led to the amputation of his right leg.
