NORTH MALUKU PROVINCE, INDONESIA – JUNE 23, 2026 Tragic incident occurred in which a 25-year-old man named Lifas died. According to local reports, he was riding a motorcycle on a rural road in a remote area when he was suddenly attacked by a large reticulated python hiding in dense vegetation by the road.
The snake was estimated to be around seven meters long, making it an exceptionally large individual even for this species. The attack happened very quickly – according to witnesses, the python likely ambushed the man, pulled him off his motorcycle, and coiled around him. Death occurred as a result of strangulation, which is a typical hunting method for these snakes. The body was later found by local residents, and according to available information, the snake was subsequently killed so the victim’s body could be recovered.
The reticulated python (Malayopython reticulatus) is the longest snake in the world and among the largest reptiles overall. It commonly grows to 3 to 6 meters, but exceptional individuals can exceed 7 meters. It is a non-venomous constrictor that kills its prey by wrapping its body around it and suffocating it. It can then swallow the prey whole thanks to an extremely flexible jaw and mobile ligaments in the skull.
