MIX: Shark attack victims

Photos show victims of shark attacks. Some were lucky enough to survive – others were not. If you have more information about any of the photos, feel free to share it with us using the “Add into post” button below.

Although the images look terrifying — and they undoubtedly are — shark attacks on humans are extremely rare. Each year, only around 70 to 100 attacks are reported worldwide, with only about 10 resulting in death. Most attacks occur in the USA (especially in Florida), Australia, and South Africa.

Only a few shark species pose a potential threat to humans. These include the notorious great white shark, the tiger shark, and the bull shark.

In most cases, when a shark does attack, it’s a case of mistaken identity – they often confuse humans with seals.

If you’re swimming in the sea or ocean and spot a shark, the most important thing is to stay calm. Sudden movements can attract the shark, as they are very curious creatures. If an attack does happen, fight back with everything you’ve got. Aim for sensitive areas like the eyes, gills, or snout. Don’t hesitate to use anything you’re holding as a weapon.
