Vultures eat corpse during traditional Tibetan funeral

TIBET, CHINA The video shows vultures eating a human corpse during a traditional Tibetan funeral known as a “sky burial”.

This tradition is based on Buddhism and symbolises the return of the body to nature. The corpse is usually chopped up with a ritual cleaver and thrown to birds of prey.

There is also a geographical reason for this type of burial. The ground on the Tibetan plateau is still frozen, called permafrost, and the dead cannot be buried underground.
