BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, USA – APRIL 19, 2013 Tamerlan Tsarnaev was one of the two brothers responsible for the Boston Marathon bombing. He was born on October 21, 1986, in Kyrgyzstan and was 26 years old when he died. Along with his younger brother, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, he detonated two homemade pressure cooker bombs near the finish line of the Boston Marathon in Boston, Massachusetts, on April 15, 2013. The attack killed three people and injured more than 260 others, many of whom suffered traumatic amputations or severe shrapnel wounds.

After photos of the suspects were released, U.S. law enforcement launched a massive manhunt. A few days later, investigators say the brothers fatally shot a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) police officer, carjacked a civilian vehicle, and engaged in a fierce gun battle with police in the city of Watertown. During the confrontation, they fired guns and threw improvised explosive devices at responding officers.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev was critically wounded during the shootout. As police closed in on his younger brother, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev fled in the stolen vehicle and, while escaping, ran over his already injured brother. Tamerlan was taken to a hospital, where he later died despite doctors’ efforts to save him. Dzhokhar remained in hiding for several hours before being found in a boat parked in the backyard of a residential home after an extensive search.

Investigators concluded that the brothers were motivated by extremist ideology and had planned the attack in advance. The Boston Marathon bombing became one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in the United States since the September 11, 2001 attacks. The tragedy led to extraordinary security measures, a large-scale police operation, and tighter security at major sporting events. In 2015, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was convicted on all charges and sentenced to death.
