TEKIT, YUCATÁN, MEXICO – JANUARY, 2025 21-year-old man known as Alejandro “El Wero” (sometimes “El Güero”) was suspected of attacking a 69-year-old woman with a machete inside her home. The woman died as a result of her injury, which caused significant anger among local residents.
A furious mob quickly mobilized, seeking their own version of justice for Alejandro. They attacked the police vehicle that was transporting him for questioning, pulled him out, and brutally lynched him. They then set his body on fire.
Although street justice can sometimes seem like a quick and effective solution, the opposite is true. It is a gross violation of human rights and the law. Even the worst criminal always has the right to a fair trial and punishment according to the law. A participant in a lynching can then often be punished more severely than the perpetrator himself. Never resort to such behavior.
