KISASA AREA, KALUMBILA DISTRICT, ZAMBIA – MARCH 20, 2026 When a 25-year-old man accused a 46-year-old woman of making his genitals disappear, it mobilized an angry mob. Nobody asked questions, nobody wanted to see any evidence, and they lynched her to death. In this case, even the police arriving in time didn’t help, as the crowd blocked them off and threw stones at them.
Across the African continent, a superstition is currently spreading about people with witch-like abilities who, after physical contact, are supposedly able to make genitals disappear. Sometimes the myth only talks about them shrinking.
In some African communities, belief in witchcraft or ritual body theft still exists. Once such hysteria spreads, it usually triggers panic and leads to the mutilation or death of innocent people. These people act in the genuine belief that they are eliminating witches.
