MADISON, WISCONSIN, USA – JULY 22, 2026 Police shooting occurred in which 38-year-old Corey Durell Ruiz was killed. Officers responded after receiving a report about a man who was allegedly checking the doors of parked vehicles in the local Marquette neighborhood.
According to police, the man attempted to escape on a bicycle after officers arrived. Officers later caught up with him at the intersection of South Baldwin Street and Williamson Street, where a physical confrontation occurred. During the struggle, Ruiz allegedly pulled out a fixed-blade knife and injured one of the officers.
Officers first attempted to subdue him using a Taser, but according to their statement, the attempt was unsuccessful. The injured officer then used his service weapon and fatally shot the man. Corey Durell Ruiz was transported to a hospital, where he later died.
The incident was recorded by some witnesses on mobile phones, and the footage was later shared on social media. The case is now being investigated by the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation. All officers involved in the incident have been placed on temporary administrative leave.
The shooting sparked protests in Madison and public debate over the use of deadly force by police. Critics also pointed out that Madison police officers were not wearing body cameras at the time of the incident, meaning there is no official recording of the encounter from their perspective.
