TURTLE MOUNTAIN, NORTH DAKOTA, USA – DECEMBER 29, 2024 Jordan Parisien, a 32-year-old member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians, was fatally shot during a traffic stop conducted by a Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) officer on the Turtle Mountain Reservation in North Dakota. The incident began when three officers responded to a report of an armed and suicidal man. According to the BIA-Turtle Mountain Agency, Parisien was driving in circles near the Sky Dancer Casino in Belcourt, attempting to provoke a police chase. A video shared on social media shows an officer with a rifle approaching a gray truck. Parisien exited the vehicle with his hands visibly away from his body, took a few steps, and then collapsed to the ground. It remains unclear which officer fired the shot or how many shots were fired. Parisien was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the BIA-Office of Justice Services have launched an investigation, and the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave. While the officer’s identity has not been officially disclosed, community speculation suggests it may be Evan Parisien, who is not related to Jordan and was reportedly involved in another fatal shooting in 2020. This incident has reignited concerns in the community about transparency and accountability, with the family demanding justice and highlighting slow progress in similar cases in the past.
The case also brings attention to the overlapping jurisdictions and authorities of federal, state, and tribal law enforcement agencies on Native American reservations. It underscores the urgent need for clear protocols and accountability in law enforcement operations within Indigenous communities.
