NIGERIA – JULY 6, 2026 Man was accused of breaking into a church, where he allegedly stole several valuables. When he was taken to the police station, instead of receiving lawful treatment, he was subjected to brutal abuse by police officers. They tied him up and brutally beat him for many hours. One of the officers recorded the incident on video.
Unfortunately, similar cases occur repeatedly in Nigeria, as well as in other countries, not only in Africa. This happens even though Nigeria is a country with a constitution and a criminal justice system that guarantees everyone the right to a fair trial and prohibits torture. However, the enforcement of the law is weak, and in practice police officers usually do not face severe punishment for such behavior. Another problem is the deeply rooted social phenomenon of vigilante justice, which has also spread into the ranks of the police, where such punishments are often considered normal.
