UKRAINE Ukrainian soldiers filmed themselves engaging in an act that could constitute a serious violation of the Geneva Conventions. After finding the body of a fallen Russian soldier on the battlefield, they placed a cigarette in his mouth and set it on fire. They appeared to find the act amusing and laughed about it.
Such conduct likely breaches international humanitarian law. The Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols require that fallen combatants be treated with dignity and respect. Acts such as desecrating remains, humiliating or degrading the dead, and mutilating bodies are specifically prohibited.
