TERNIVKA, DNIPROPETROVSK OBLAST, UKRAINE – FEBRUARY 1, 2026 Russian drone attack on the city of Ternivka claimed the lives of at least 12 civilians and another 16 people were injured. One of the main targets of the attack was a bus transporting employees of the DTEK Pavlohradvuhill mining company who were returning home after their shift.
According to Ukrainian authorities, several Shahed-type drones struck the area. One of them exploded near the bus, which caught fire after the impact. The vehicle was almost completely destroyed, and some passengers remained trapped inside. Other people were injured by shrapnel or the blast wave. During the same attack, other civilian facilities in the area were also damaged, including DTEK’s mining infrastructure.
The victims were mostly miners returning from work. Emergency crews spent several hours at the scene extinguishing the fire and removing the dead and injured from the wreckage of the bus. According to DTEK, it was one of the most tragic events in the company’s history, and the company later declared a day of mourning in memory of the deceased employees.
After documenting the incident, the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission stated that it found no signs of a military target in the immediate vicinity of the damaged bus. Ukrainian authorities described the attack as a deliberate strike against civilians and said the victims were workers returning home from their jobs, not military personnel.
