UKRAINE Photo has surfaced online showing a Ukrainian soldier posing with the decapitated body of a Russian soldier. In a second photo, the soldier’s severed head is seen resting on a railing, apparently displayed in a way that may have been intended to desecrate or humiliate the dead.
It is unclear whether the soldier was decapitated after death, executed in this manner, or lost his head in some other way during the fighting. Regardless of the circumstances, such conduct may constitute a war crime – international humanitarian law requires the dead to be treated with dignity and prohibits the execution of soldiers who are hors de combat.
