LEBANON – SEPTEMBER 17, 2024 Lebanon was shaken by a series of coordinated pager explosions used by Hezbollah members. The explosions occurred primarily in Beirut, southern Lebanon, and the Bekaa Valley, areas where Hezbollah has a strong presence. The first wave on September 17 killed at least 12 people and injured nearly 3,000 others. The following day, hundreds of handheld radios also exploded.
Hezbollah is a Lebanese Shiite political and armed movement supported by Iran and a long-standing adversary of Israel. After the war between Israel and Hamas broke out in October 2023, Hezbollah began regularly attacking Israel across the Lebanon-Israel border, while Israel carried out attacks against its positions in Lebanon.
According to a Reuters investigation, some of the pagers were secretly modified before being delivered to Hezbollah to contain small amounts of explosives. Israel has not officially confirmed responsibility for the operation, but according to all available sources, it was carried out by the Israeli Mossad.
The attack represented an extremely unusual method of targeted operation and also caused a significant number of injuries among Hezbollah members and people in their vicinity. The incident subsequently contributed to a further escalation of the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
