BAGHDAD, IRAQ – AUGUST 10, 2004 Mohammed Mutawalli, an Egyptian citizen from Dakahlia Governorate, was kidnapped in Iraq in 2004. Contemporary sources attributed his kidnapping and subsequent execution to the Tawhid and Jihad group, led by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.
Tawhid and Jihad accused him of being an Egyptian spy cooperating with U.S. forces. In the video, Mutawalli reportedly claimed that he had helped the Americans identify targets for attacks against Iraqi insurgents. However, these claims were never independently verified.
Mutawalli was executed on camera by members of Tawhid and Jihad by knife decapitation. His execution was recorded on video and later published on an Islamist website.
