MYANMAR (BURMA) – MAY, 2026 In Myanmar, which has been plagued by civil war for more than five years, a brutal execution of an elderly female civilian took place. The incident reportedly occurred around May 2026, and her remains were allegedly dragged to the water and thrown into a river or lake.
Min Zay Thant and other members of the Warazup militia, which is linked to the Myanmar military, the Tatmadaw, were reportedly involved in the incident. The woman was interrogated before her death. The men asked her whether she had ever visited a certain camp or outpost. The woman claimed she had never been there and begged the men not to kill her. Nevertheless, one of them subsequently beheaded her. The men then discussed cutting up the body and disposing of it in the water.
The incident fits into the broader conflict that has engulfed Myanmar since the military coup in February 2021. The military overthrew the civilian government and violently suppressed widespread protests. Some of the protest movement subsequently developed into armed groups known as the People’s Defence Forces (PDF), which joined forces with some long-standing ethnic armed organizations.
As a result, the conflict is not simply a matter of two clearly separated sides fighting each other. On one side are the Tatmadaw and various groups cooperating with the military, while the PDF and numerous ethnic armed organizations operate against them. The individual groups also do not always share the same command structure or political goals.
Civilians can therefore become targets of violence because they are suspected of providing information, food, or other assistance to the opposing side. International investigators have documented war crimes and other serious abuses by Myanmar’s military as well as by some anti-government armed groups in recent years.
