SENO PROVINCE, BURKINA FASO – AUGUST 17, 2026 Abou Zeid Al-Burkinabi, a prominent member of the Islamic State Sahel Province (IS Sahel), was killed in a clash with the rival jihadist group Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) in the areas of Bangao and Dorkoye in Seno Province.
Although both organizations are designated as terrorist groups and their goal is armed jihad, JNIM is affiliated with al-Qaeda, while IS Sahel belongs to the Islamic State. These two branches of the jihadist movement have long competed for territory, fighters, local support, and resources. Their rivalry eventually escalated into open armed clashes.
JNIM and IS Sahel may therefore have common enemies, but they are also ideological and power rivals. In some areas, JNIM attempts to gain the support of local communities, while IS Sahel is known for its brutal violence against civilians. This does not mean that JNIM is less dangerous – it too has committed serious acts of violence.
