LAGOS, NIGERIA – APRIL 4, 2017 Incident occurred in the Mushin neighborhood in which police gunfire killed a local street vendor, Kudirat Adebayo. The woman was selling fried snacks near the Onipanu toll gate when a bullet struck her in the head. She died at the scene. Sources give her age as approximately 50-51, and according to her family, she was the mother of several children.
The incident began when officers from the Olosan police division stopped a young man suspected of being a so-called “Yahoo Boy” – a Nigerian term for an internet scammer. The man denied the accusation and said he was returning from work. The situation gradually escalated, and additional officers arrived and attempted to take him away.
People gathered around the officers, and some attempted to prevent the arrest. According to witnesses, the police then began firing into the crowd, and one of the bullets struck Kudirat, who had nothing to do with the confrontation. A motorcycle taxi driver was also injured.
Police gave a different account of the incident at the time, saying the shooting occurred during an attack by the crowd on police officers. However, officers linked to the shooting were taken into custody, and the case was to be investigated.
A later investigation by the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry concluded that Kudirat Adebayo had been unlawfully killed by a police officer. The panel found that her right to life had been violated, recommended prosecuting the officers responsible, and awarded her family NGN 10 million (USD 7,500) in compensation.
