SAN ISIDRO, HUÁNUCO, PERU – JUNE 16, 2026 Tragic accident occurred at night on Federico Basadre Road in the San Isidro area. A bus operated by Real Chancas, traveling from Pucallpa to Lima, went off the road at around 11:30 p.m. and, after the driver lost control, overturned and crashed into a residential building.
Eleven people died in the accident, including ten-year-old Jarley Jair Inuma Ruiz, the 53-year-old bus driver Pedro Alejandro Lezameta Pantoja, and other passengers Erick Lachuma Rengifo (25), Rayler Wadinson Falcón Tantalaya (40), Valentina Trillo Ore (56), and José Manuel Bocanegra Vilchez (76). Some of the victims could not initially be identified.
Approximately 19 other passengers were injured and taken to a hospital in Tingo María. Small children were also among the injured. Doctors treated patients with kidney injuries, bleeding, and other serious consequences of the crash.
One of the most seriously injured was 25-year-old Carita Mauricia Pelileo Macanilla, who was traveling with her two young children. She suffered such devastating injuries in the crash that her right leg had to be amputated. Her four-year-old son, Jean Pierre Marimuya Pelileo, died in the accident, while eight-month-old Daniel Riveiro Pelileo survived and was rescued from the wreckage.
According to some survivors, the bus had experienced problems even before the crash. One passenger said the vehicle had mechanical issues already when it left Pucallpa. Investigators therefore examined the possibility of a mechanical failure, while other initial reports also suggested that the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel. The exact cause of the accident was expected to be determined through further investigation.
