PASO GUAYABO, OAXACA, MEXICO – SEPTEMBER 8, 2026 Amy Navarrete Arriola, a former PVEM party candidate for mayor of Matías Romero, was shot during a local festival in the community of Paso Guayabo. Two men were also killed in the attack.

According to authorities, an armed man approached the victims during celebrations honoring Virgen de la Natividad and fired several shots. Amy Navarrete Arriola and one of the men, identified by the initials F.M.M., died at the scene. The identity of the third victim had not been confirmed at the time the reports were published.
Navarrete Arriola was a lawyer and had previously run for mayor of Matías Romero. At the time of the attack, local media reported that she was considering running for the position again. Police have not yet disclosed a motive for the attack or announced the arrest of a suspect.
