Egyptian airstrikes allegedly kill over 100 Sudanese gold miners

JABAL AL-UQAYDAT, SUDAN – OCTOBER 10, 2026 Airstrikes hit an informal gold-mining camp in the Jabal al-Uqaydat area near the Egypt-Sudan border, reportedly killing more than 100 civilian miners and injuring dozens of others. The attack destroyed parts of the camp, leaving survivors searching for the dead and wounded in the remote area.

Survivors and Sudanese human rights organizations accused the Egyptian Air Force of carrying out the strikes. The reported death toll initially stood at at least 72 but later rose to at least 114, according to Emergency Lawyers. Higher figures circulated in local reports but could not be independently verified. Egypt has acknowledged conducting anti-smuggling operations along the border but has not publicly confirmed responsibility for the deadly attack.

The incident occurred amid growing tensions along the disputed border, where informal gold mining provides a livelihood for many Sudanese civilians. Sudan’s military leadership ordered an official investigation into the strikes as questions mounted over the circumstances of the attack and the identities of those responsible.
