KILLEEN, TEXAS, USA – OCTOBER 16, 1991 35-year-old George Pierre Hennard drove his pickup truck through the front window of Luby’s Cafeteria and then opened fire on the customers inside. The massacre took place during the lunchtime rush, when a large number of people were inside the restaurant.
Hennard was armed with two 9mm semiautomatic pistols, which he used to shoot and kill 23 people and injure another 27 within minutes. Among the victims were 14 women and eight men. Some customers tried to hide under tables or in other parts of the restaurant, while others searched for a way to escape.
Police officers arrived at the scene and exchanged gunfire with the attacker. Hennard was struck by several bullets and subsequently retreated to the rear of the restaurant. Despite police demands that he surrender, he refused to put down his weapon and eventually committed suicide.
The subsequent investigation revealed that Hennard had a strongly hostile attitude toward women, which may also have influenced his choice of victims. However, the exact motive for the attack was never conclusively established.
