MIX: Victims of Ku Klux Klan

USA After the American Civil War (1861–1865), the United States entered the Reconstruction era, during which slavery was abolished and African Americans were constitutionally guaranteed civil rights, including the right to vote. However, these changes encountered strong resistance from parts of the white population, particularly former slaveholders and supporters of the Confederacy.

In the following years, the Black population became the target of organized racial violence. Groups such as the Ku Klux Klan, founded in 1865 by former Confederate soldiers, used murder, lynching, arson attacks, and intimidation to prevent African Americans from voting, achieving economic independence, and exercising their newly acquired rights. Victims included not only ordinary residents but also voting rights activists, local officials, and people who tried to defend their communities.

Lynchings, often carried out publicly in front of crowds of onlookers, were among the most brutal manifestations of racial terror at the time. Victims were hanged, burned alive, or otherwise tortured, while perpetrators frequently escaped punishment. The violence also served as a public warning to other Black people who dared to demand equal rights.

This period represents one of the darkest chapters in American history. The abolition of slavery did not, in itself, mean the end of racial oppression. Formally guaranteed equality remained out of reach for many African Americans, while violence, discrimination, and impunity for perpetrators continued to affect American society for many decades.
