BORDEAUX, FRANCE – APRIL 10, 2024 On the banks of the Garonne River, near the famous Miroir d’Eau fountain, not far from Place de la Bourse, a 25-year-old man (some sources say 28-year-old) of Afghan origin attacked two men with a knife. The victims were 26 and 37 years old, originally from Algeria. According to eyewitnesses, they had started criticizing him for drinking alcohol during the Muslim holiday Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan. This was probably the main motive.
The older of the two, Rachid Bouach, sustained serious injuries and unfortunately did not survive. The younger victim was hospitalized with serious but not life-threatening injuries.
After the attack, the perpetrator tried to flee from the approaching police toward the Pont de Pierre bridge. However, the police caught up with him, and he continued acting aggressively and refused to surrender. This led law enforcement to use deadly force. After repeated warnings and warning shots into the air, he was shot three times and died on the spot.
Although some media describe this attack as a terrorist act, there is no indication that the attacker had planned it in any way. Apparently, he was simply provoked by comments directed at him. Ironically, the case has outraged human rights advocates who criticized the police for using deadly force.
