KOBANI, SYRIA – MARCH 16, 2015 On the night of March 16–17, 2025, a Turkish drone targeted a civilian house in the village of Barkh Botan, south of the Syrian city of Kobani. The strike killed nine members of a single Kurdish family, including seven children aged between 2 and 14. Two other family members, Ronida (18) and Narin (9) Othman Abdo, were seriously injured and transported to hospital.
According to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the family originally came from the village of Kirk. The father worked as a guard on the farm where the drone strike occurred. It is believed the family was preparing for their early morning meal ahead of fasting for Ramadan when they were struck.
The SDF condemned the strike as a “horrific massacre” and “crime against humanity,” calling it part of Turkey’s wider military strategy of ethnic cleansing in Kurdish-populated northern Syria. The Turkish government, however, denied responsibility and stated that its operations are aimed only at terrorist targets and conducted with the utmost care to avoid civilian casualties.
This incident occurred just days before Newroz, the Kurdish New Year, which symbolizes freedom and renewal. The local community is in mourning, and the funeral is expected to draw thousands of people in protest and grief.
The attack is part of a broader pattern of Turkish military operations in northern Syria, which have included strikes on critical civilian infrastructure such as dams, bridges, and hospitals, displacing large portions of the population. Kurdish groups and international human rights organizations are calling for an independent investigation and for those responsible to be held accountable.
