OPM, also known as the Free Papua Movement, was established in December 1963 and has long sought Papua’s independence from Indonesia. Its goal is to separate this province from the so-called Unitary Republic of Indonesia (NKRI) and to create an independent Papuan state. The group often pursues its demands through armed resistance against Indonesian authorities and symbols of state power.
