Indonesian separatists attack trans-Papua workers

PAPUA, INDONESIA – SEPTEMBER 29, 2022  On the Trans Papua West road in Indonesia’s Papua province, there was an attack on a group of workers. This road, which connects the Maybrat and Bintuni districts, was ambushed by an armed group, and the workers involved in its construction were attacked. The assault was attributed to a separatist group linked to the Organisasi Papua Merdeka (OPM) movement.

OPM, also known as the Free Papua Movement, was established in December 1963 and has long sought Papua’s independence from Indonesia. Its goal is to separate this province from the so-called Unitary Republic of Indonesia (NKRI) and to create an independent Papuan state. The group often pursues its demands through armed resistance against Indonesian authorities and symbols of state power.
