TERPILITSY, LENINGRAD REGION, RUSSIA – MAY, 2025 In the village of Terpilitsy, a tragedy occurred that claimed the lives of two teenage girls. 11-year-old Masha and her 12-year-old friend Moika went to explore an abandoned building, a so-called urbex. They did not behave very responsibly inside and were demolishing a load-bearing wall. That caused a concrete slab from the ceiling to fall. Both were crushed and died on the spot.
Urbex is increasingly popular among young people, mainly due to the influence of YouTube. There are many creators who go into interesting and abandoned buildings and popularize this activity. Unfortunately, they do not always point out the risks involved.
