Up to 21 dead in suicide bombing attack at church in Damascus

DAMASCUS, SYRIA – JUNE 22, 2025 Suicide bombing tore through Sunday Mass at the Mar Elias Greek church in Dweila, a suburb of Damascus, leaving devastation and grief in its wake. The attacker struck at a moment when the church was filled with worshippers. Reports indicate that between 13 and 21 people lost their lives, with over 50 more injured. Tragically, officials warn the death toll could rise. The assailant claimed allegiance to ISIS.

According to multiple witnesses, the attacker began shooting indiscriminately inside the packed church before detonating an explosive vest. Some accounts mention he may have also thrown a grenade. There are conflicting reports suggesting a possible second assailant. The blast caused catastrophic damage – splintered pews and human remains were scattered across the sanctuary in a harrowing scene.

The Syrian Interior Ministry later confirmed that the attacker had been identified as a known ISIS militant. Whether the bombing was the act of a lone extremist or a coordinated jihadist mission remains unclear, but intelligence officials believe it may signal renewed activity by jihadist cells in the region.

In response, the interim government has vowed to bolster protections for religious minorities and has declared three days of national mourning. President Sharaa addressed the nation on television, urging unity and expressing heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families.
