BATALA, PUNJAB, INDIA – JUNE 26, 2025 Near a bakery on Kadian Road, two attackers on a motorcycle opened fire on a white SUV. After firing a burst of shots, they immediately fled the scene. It later emerged that the vehicle was carrying Harjit Kaur, a well-known public figure. She was a former mayor of the city and the mother of gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria.
Harjit Kaur suffered serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, where she soon died. Also in the car was her nephew, identified as Karanvir Singh, who died on the spot during the attack.
Although the case is still under investigation, preliminary information suggests the main motive was revenge by a rival gang called Bambiha. The government and police have promised a thorough investigation and efforts to restore peace in the area.
Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, whose real name is Jagdeep Singh, is one of the most notorious and dangerous gangsters in all of India. He became involved in organized crime as early as 2000, including drug trafficking, extortion, violent crimes, and illegal possession of weapons. In 2025, he faced 128 criminal charges, 12 of which were related to drugs. Although convicted and imprisoned, his influence likely continued from behind bars, as he reportedly communicated with the outside world via encrypted messages on a mobile phone. His reach extends far beyond India’s borders, with known links to international crime networks including those in the USA, Canada, and Pakistan.
