SRI LANKA – APRIL 21, 2019 During Easter 2019, a series of coordinated terrorist bombings occurred in Sri Lanka. Churches and luxury hotels in different parts of the country were targeted. Especially in the capital Colombo and other cities such as Negombo and Batticaloa.
The first explosions occurred around 8:45 a.m. in three churches during Easter mass and in three luxury hotels. The churches affected were St. Anthony’s Church in Colombo, St. Sebastian’s Church in Negombo, Evangelical Church in Batticaloa. And these luxury hotels: Shangri-La, Cinnamon Grand and Kingsbury in Colombo.
Other explosions shortly afterwards occurred at the Dehiwale Guest House and in the Dematagoda residential area.
The series of attacks were carried out by Islamic suicide bombers linked to foreign terrorist groups. They killed 269 people, including at least 45 foreigners. More than 500 people were injured. Sri Lanka declared a state of emergency in the immediate aftermath. The attacks are believed to be the worst in Sri Lankan history since the end of the civil war in 2009.
The notorious terrorist organisation Islamic State (ISIS) claimed responsibility, but they were carried out by the local terrorist organisation National Thowheeth Jama’ath (NTJ).
