TOKMAK, ZAPORIZHZHIA OBLAST, UKRAINE – JULY 3, 2026 The city of Tokmak, located in the Russian-occupied part of Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region, was hit by a drone strike that, according to Russian occupation authorities, struck a local marketplace. The attack occurred during the day while the market was crowded with shoppers. Officials from the Moscow-installed administration claimed that at least five civilians were killed and another 18 were injured. These claims have not been independently verified.
Russian authorities blamed the Ukrainian Armed Forces for the strike, alleging that the drone deliberately targeted civilian infrastructure. Shortly after the attack, photos and videos circulated on social media showing damaged market stalls, destroyed vehicles, and emergency responders treating the wounded. However, neither the authenticity of the footage nor the exact circumstances of the attack have been independently confirmed.
Tokmak is located about 50 miles (80 kilometers) south of the city of Zaporizhzhia and has been under Russian control since 2022. The city serves as an important logistics hub for Russian military supply routes in southern Ukraine. Because of its strategic importance, it has repeatedly been targeted by shelling and drone strikes throughout the war.
As of the time the reports were published, the Ukrainian side had neither confirmed nor commented on responsibility for the attack. Since Tokmak is located in occupied territory and access for independent journalists is highly restricted, many details surrounding the incident remain unverified.
