SAO PAULO, BRAZIL – OCTOBER 2, 1992 In Carandiru prison, a fight broke out between two rival factions, which escalated into a prison riot. The prison service cracked down so brutally that the incident has gone down in history as the worst prison massacre in history.
Within half an hour, 111 prisoners were murdered. They were locked in their cells and, when they were completely defenceless, mercilessly executed. On average, each prisoner had five gunshot wounds in his body.
None of the police officers involved were punished for a long time. Brazil opened a trial in 2014 in which 73 police officers were retroactively convicted. But the punishments were rather symbolic.
