ENSENADA, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO – MAY 20, 2023 In the area known as San Vicente near the city of Ensenada, an armed attack targeted a group of small off-road vehicle racers during the Cachanillazo race. Among the racers was a high-ranking cartel member, 35-year-old Alonso Arámbula Piña, better known by his nickname “El Trébol.”

He was most likely the primary target of the attack, with his death believed to be the sole motive behind it. Despite this, the attackers opened fire on all the racers.
It was likely difficult to identify the intended target, as all participants were wearing helmets. As a result, nine people were killed, including Alonso and his girlfriend, 23-year-old Leslie Mariana Soto Castro, and one person was injured.

The ambush took place in a parking area along the Transpeninsular Highway, where the racers had stopped to rest.
The attack is believed to have been carried out by the notorious Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).
