ESCONDIDO, CALIFORNIA, USA – NOVEMBER 3, 2023 Police officers shot and killed a 48-year-old man from Indiana after he fired at them while trying to escape.
The incident began around 6:40 a.m. when officers responded to a call about a man sleeping in a sleeping bag on the porch of a mobile home on East Valley Parkway. When officers made contact with him, they attempted to detain him, but he suddenly took off running.
As he fled, the man pulled out a gun and fired multiple shots at the officers. In response, the officers returned fire, hitting him. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died. No officers were injured in the exchange.
Investigators later discovered that the man had a felony warrant out of Indiana for a parole violation. The San Diego Police Department’s Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation, following standard protocol to ensure an independent review of officer-involved shootings.
