Emeç was a prominent journalist and a high-ranking representative of the Hürriyet daily newspaper, where he worked as the chief columnist and editorial coordinator.

The murder took place in 1990 in Istanbul, when Emeç was attacked in front of his home. The attackers opened fire on him as he was getting into his car. During the attack, his personal driver and bodyguard was also killed.
The case caused enormous shock and a wave of outrage in Turkey, because it was a targeted attack on a well-known public figure. The assassination became a symbol of the danger that Turkish journalists faced during a period of political tension and violence.
