Australian man dies during parasailing accident in Thailand

PHUKET, THAILAND – JULY 12, 2017 71-year-old Australian businessman Roger John Hussey died in a tragic accident during parasailing at Kata Beach. The man, who was among the respected figures of the business community in Western Australia, decided during his vacation to try a popular water activity that became fatal for him.

Hussey was traveling around Thailand with his wife Boosabong Tongsanga. Before visiting Phuket, they also stayed in the Chiang Mai area. According to his wife, Roger watched other tourists parasailing for several days and the activity seemed safe to him, so he decided to try it as well.

The accident happened shortly after takeoff. Hussey was attached to a parasail pulled by a motorboat and after the boat accelerated, he rose several dozen to several hundred feet above the water. Shortly afterward, however, his safety harness came loose and the man fell into the sea. The height of the fall was estimated according to various reports to be hundreds of feet, with some sources stating it was around 330 feet (70 meters).

The incident was captured on video by his wife, who was watching his ride from the beach. After the fall into the water, people nearby went to Hussey, pulled him ashore, and provided first aid. He was taken to a hospital, but later died from his injuries.

The cause of the accident was under investigation. Operators stated that Hussey may have accidentally pulled on part of the equipment, which caused the harness to become detached. However, police also investigated possible negligence by the operator, including compliance with safety procedures and equipment inspections. In connection with the accident, two men – a parasailing instructor and a boat driver – were later charged with negligence causing death.

Roger Hussey was not just a tourist on vacation. In Australia, he was known as a successful businessman, founder of Century Holdings, and a member of several boards. He also served as deputy chairman of the Landgate organization in Western Australia and earned degrees in law and economics during his life.

His death became one of the most well-known cases of fatal parasailing accidents in Thailand. The incident highlighted the risks that can arise even during common tourist activities if equipment fails or safety procedures are not followed.
