IRAN & IRAQ Iran-Iraq War is the name of the bloody conflict that took place between these two Middle Eastern nations over a long period of 8 years, from September 22, 1980 to August 20, 1988. The main reasons for the war were territorial disputes, especially over the Shatt al-Arab region, and Iranian fear of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. He was at the time spreading the ideas of the Islamic Revolution in Iran.
It was Hussein who invaded Iran with his army in September 1980, expecting a quick victory. But the Iranian army, despite being weakened by the revolutionary changes, was able to effectively confront the Iraqi enemy. The fighting gradually turned into a long, exhausting war with massive use of trench tactics, chemical weapons and rocket attacks on civilian areas. The conflict was accompanied by human rights violations on both sides.
In August 1988, the UN brokered a ceasefire, which both sides accepted. The war did not end with territorial gains for either side. But both sides faced devastating economic consequences, which hit the civilian population hardest.
Some of the photos were upscaled and enhanced using AI tools. But they are all authentic and remind us that every war is terrible and that humanity should learn from every similar failure so that history never repeats itself.
