CHECHNYA, RUSSIA Graphic video depicting a war crime was filmed during the First Chechen War, which lasted from December 11, 1994, to August 31, 1996. Chechen separatists executed their Russian prisoner in an especially brutal manner – they cut off his head with a knife in front of the camera.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Chechnya, like many other autonomous republics, sought greater autonomy and independence from Russia. However, Moscow never recognized Chechnya’s independence, which triggered the First Chechen War. The conflict ended with a victory for the Chechen separatists. Although Chechnya was never internationally recognized, the Russian military withdrew. This situation lasted for three years until the Second Chechen War began, after which Russia reestablished full control over Chechnya.
To this day, the First Chechen War is considered one of the most brutal conflicts in Europe after the end of the Cold War. Both sides repeatedly violated international humanitarian law. For example, Russian artillery shelled densely populated areas. There are also reports of extrajudicial executions of civilians, torture of prisoners, as well as looting and destruction of property.
