BESLAN, RUSSIA – SEPTEMBER, 2004 The Beslan school massacre is an event also known as the “Beslan school hostage crisis” or “Beslan school siege”. The building of the primary school was seized by Chechen Islamic terrorists, who held approximately 1,200 hostages, including children and their parents, from 1 to 3 September. The terrorists chose the first day of school for their attack, when the school was holding a celebration to open the new school year.
On September 3, the terrorists detonated a bomb that killed 330 hostages, 10 members of a special police unit and 31 terrorists. 783 people were injured.
