SAPANG BAYAN, BULACAN, PHILIPPINES – AUGUST 14, 2014 A passerby discovered a woman’s corpse in the water in a rice field. Police were immediately called to the scene and identified her as 26-year-old Anria Galang Espiritu. Chains and a screwdriver were also found at the scene. The marks on her body suggested that she had been tortured with these tools. A forensic autopsy also confirmed that she had been gang-raped. In total, four different semen samples were taken from her vagina.

Anria was last seen getting into a jeepney. This is a smaller bus that serves as a means of public transportation in the Philippines. Suspicion has fallen on the driver Elmer Joson and his cronies Ramil Diarca and Melvin Ulam. The fourth was not caught. This case has opened up the debate on the death penalty in the Philippines.
