CAMBODIA – OCTOBER, 2019 21-year-old British tourist Amelia Bambridge disappeared on October 24, 2019, while staying on the Cambodian island of Koh Rong. She was last seen at around 3 a.m. at a beach party at the Police Beach venue. The following day, she failed to check out of the Nest Beach Club hostel. Her backpack, phone, money, and bank cards were found on rocks near the beach, while her passport remained at the hostel.

After an extensive search, her body was found on October 31 by a fisherman in the Gulf of Thailand near Koh Chhlam island, approximately 60 miles (97 kilometers) from where she had disappeared. Cambodian authorities subsequently determined that the cause of death was drowning. There were reportedly no signs of physical assault on her body, and the investigation found no evidence of foul play.

However, the case raised new questions a year later when additional toxicology tests conducted in the United Kingdom detected GHB, MDMA, and MDA in the collected samples. Amelia’s mother, Linda Schultes, did not believe her daughter would have willingly taken such substances. She suspected that someone might have spiked her drink during the party.

The family therefore called for the investigation to be reopened and for the new findings to be forwarded to Cambodian authorities. Although the toxicology results raised serious questions about the circumstances surrounding her death, it was never established that Amelia had been drugged against her will or that she had been the victim of a crime.
