CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, USA – MARCH 9, 2026 Police tried to stop a vehicle that, according to the investigation, was linked to a previous violent incident on the highway. However, the driver, 42-year-old Derek Jordan, began to flee, hit a pedestrian during the drive, and later also collided with a city bus and a police vehicle.
After a short chase, the vehicle ended up in a narrow alley where it was surrounded by police officers. The situation escalated when the officers attempted to get the driver out of the car. According to camera footage, a service weapon was then used and Derek Jordan was shot several times.
The intervention immediately became the subject of an investigation. The family of the deceased claims that the police could have handled the situation differently and that a lethal intervention was not necessary, while the police argue that it was a dangerous situation following previous collisions and the escape. The case is now being handled by independent oversight bodies and investigators.
