PATIALA, PUNJAB, INDIA – AUGUST 11, 2026 Married couple was brutally attacked by a pit bull while viewing a house for rent in the Ghuman Nagar area. The attack occurred when Ankit Sabharwal, a private bank manager, and his wife, Shifali Sabharwal, a professor at Chandigarh University, arrived at the property together with a real estate agent.
As soon as the gate of the house was opened, the dog ran outside and attacked Shifali first. It caused deep injuries to her arms and other parts of her body, requiring her to undergo surgery. Ankit tried to save his wife, but the dog also attacked him, causing deep bite wounds to his back and legs.
Security camera footage captured the entire attack. Several local residents tried to drive the dog away using sticks before managing to pull the injured couple away from the animal to safety. According to Ankit, he suffered numerous injuries and required stitches all over his body, while Shifali remained hospitalized after surgery.
Police subsequently launched an investigation and filed a criminal complaint against the as-yet-unidentified owner of the dog. The pit bull was meanwhile taken into custody by the municipal authorities for a veterinary examination. Following the attack, the mayor announced plans to ban the keeping of aggressive dog breeds as pets in the city.
