BHAIRAB, KISHOREGANJ DISTRICT, BANGLADESH – OCTOBER 23, 2023 At least 17 people were killed and dozens of others were injured after a freight train struck the rear carriages of a passenger express near Bhairab Bazar Junction railway station. The Egarosindhur Godhuli passenger train was traveling from the city of Kishoreganj to Dhaka when a freight train heading toward Chattogram collided with it at around 3:30 p.m. The accident occurred as the passenger train was switching to another track.
The impact derailed three rear carriages and overturned the last two onto their sides. The overcrowded carriages were badly damaged, leaving passengers trapped inside while others were thrown out. Rescue workers, firefighters, police officers, and local residents arrived at the scene, pulling victims from the wreckage and transporting the injured to hospitals.
A preliminary investigation suggested that the freight train had passed a signal without authorization. Several railway employees were suspended in connection with the accident, and authorities launched an investigation.
