QUITO, PICHINCHA PROVINCE, ECUADOR – OCTOBER 22, 2026 Eight inmates died and another ten were injured during riots that occurred almost simultaneously at two prisons in Ecuador. The violence broke out at Cotopaxi No. 1 Prison in Latacunga and Pichincha No. 1 Prison, also known as El Inca, in the Quito metropolitan area.
Four inmates died at each facility. The injured received medical treatment, and military and police units were deployed to the prisons, where they managed to regain control of the situation.
Authorities said they had identified several individuals suspected of playing a key role in organizing the riots. They are to be transferred to the maximum-security El Encuentro prison. The incidents occurred as Ecuador continues to struggle with prison violence and the influence of organized criminal groups.
